The ‘Sea Lexicon’ is a collaborative endeavour that aims at the co-creation of a lexicon based on words related to the sea. It is an invitation for a transregional thinking through the perspective of the sea. We focus on words that animate the lives of coastal communities in various languages across the Indian Ocean.

Aarthi Sridhar

Aarthi Sridhar is a founder trustee of Dakshin Foundation and heads its Communities and Resource Governance Programme. Her research interests cover a range of historical and contemporary socio-legal studies, with a focus on regulating resource use, environmental justice and democratic practices. She is one of the co-PIs of the core team.

Aravind P.K.

Aravind P.K.

Aravind is a research scholar at Mahindra University. His work delves into the nuances of Indian Ocean society and trade, with a particular emphasis on the captivating history of the Mangalore region. His contributions centre around the Beary language.

Sayan Dey

Sayan Dey

Dr. Sayan Dey is currently working as an Assistant Professor at the School of Liberal Arts, Alliance University, Bangalore. His areas of research interest are postcolonial studies, decolonial studies, creole studies, critical diversity studies, critical food studies, and many more.

Dr. Annu Jalais

Dr. Annu Jalais

Annu Jalais is an environmental anthropologist. She works as an Associate Professor at School of Interwoven Arts and Science, KREA University. Her interdisciplinary research and teaching experience focuses on: the human-nonhuman interface; environment and climate change; religious identity and migration; caste and social justice. 

Raseela P A

Raseela P A

Raseela P A is a former teacher and an independent researcher from the Androth island of Lakshadweep. She holds a triple major bachelor’s degree from Regional Institute of Education, Mysore. She has completed her Master’s in English Literature from JNU, New Delhi.

Sindhu Nepolean

Sindhu Nepolean

Sindhu Nepolean is an independent researcher and a freelance journalist based out of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. She is associating with research projects carried out by institutions like the University of Sussex, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, etc.

Prerana Gawde

Prerana Gawde

Prerana Gawde is a marine science researcher with an interest in sustainable marine resource management and enhancing the resilience of marine ecosystems. She works on pole and line tuna fisheries of Lakshadweep, employing baitfish species as a focal point for developing integrated ecological fish surveys and inclusive resource management approaches.

Mahaboob Khan

Mahaboob Khan

Mahaboob Khan is a graduate and practitioner of Social Work who hails from the Kadmat island of Lakshadweep. He has been working with the fisher community of Lakshadweep for the promotion of sustainable fisheries for nature conservation and the protection of people’s livelihoods for more than seven years.

Muhammed Luqman

Muhammed Luqman

Muhammed Luqman O P is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Society and Culture programme at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. With training in Anthropology and Political Science, he is interested in marginality, religion, coastal communities and political ecology. 

Lakshmi Pradeep

Lakshmi Pradeep

Lakshmi Pradeep is a postdoctoral scholar in the Working Group “Reclaiming Turtles All the Way Down” in Department III at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, Germany. She specializes in the fields of Environmental Anthropology, Science and Technology Studies, and Island Studies. 

Sridhar A

Sridhar A

Sridhar A is a Senior Technical Officer (Coasts & Deltas) at Wetlands International South Asia, where he leads initiatives on coastal resilience, wetland conservation, and participatory water governance. His research interests include commoning practices around water, coastal community resilience, and the use of science and technical tools for environmental justice. 

Dr. Niranjan Jaladas

Dr. Niranjan Jaladas

Niranjan Jaladas is a socio-environmental historian, currently working at Netaji Nagar College for Women. He was an ICSSR doctoral fellow at the CSSSC. Coming from a background of marginal fishers in the coastal Sundarbans, he possesses first-hand experience in riverine fishing and his interests are  refugee studies, nature-society relations, and climate change.
